How to Rollback a Windows Update

Windows updates occasionally cause system instability, driver conflicts, or performance issues. Rolling back to a previous version removes the problematic update and restores your system to its prior state.

  1. Open Windows Update Settings. Press Windows + I to open Settings. Click Update & Security (Windows 10) or Windows Update (Windows 11). Select View update history from the main panel.
  2. Uninstall the problematic update. Click Uninstall updates at the top of the update history page. This opens the Control Panel's installed updates list. Locate the update you want to remove by date or KB number.
  3. Remove the update. Right-click the problematic update and select Uninstall. Click Yes when prompted to confirm the removal. Windows will process the uninstallation, which may take several minutes.
  4. Restart your computer. Click Restart now when prompted, or manually restart your computer. The system will complete the rollback process during the restart sequence.
  5. Verify the rollback. After restart, return to Windows Update settings and check View update history. Confirm the problematic update no longer appears in the installed updates list.
  6. Prevent automatic reinstallation. In Windows Update settings, click Advanced options. Enable 'Pause updates' temporarily or use the Show or hide updates troubleshooter from Microsoft to permanently block specific updates.
