How to Recover a Hacked Facebook Account

A hacked Facebook account requires immediate action to prevent further damage and restore your access. Facebook provides several recovery methods depending on whether you can still access your email or phone number.

  1. Report the compromised account to Facebook. Go to facebook.com/hacked on any device. Select 'My account is compromised' and follow the prompts to report unauthorized access. Facebook will immediately secure your account and begin the recovery process.
  2. Reset your password using trusted contacts. Click 'Forgotten account' on the login page, then enter your email or phone number. If you cannot access these, select 'No longer have access to these?' and choose 'Reveal My Trusted Contacts'. Contact three of your trusted friends and ask them for their security codes.
  3. Verify your identity with government ID. If trusted contacts fail, select 'Submit an ID' from the recovery options. Upload a clear photo of your government-issued ID that matches the name on your Facebook account. Facebook typically responds within 24-48 hours.
  4. Secure your account immediately after regaining access. Change your password to something unique and strong. Go to Settings > Security and Login > Change Password. Enable two-factor authentication by clicking 'Use two-factor authentication' and selecting either text message or authentication app.
  5. Remove unauthorized apps and review login activity. Navigate to Settings > Security and Login > Where You're Logged In. End all sessions you don't recognize. Then go to Settings > Apps and Websites and remove any suspicious applications that you didn't authorize.
  6. Check and restore your profile information. Review your profile, posts, and messages for unauthorized changes or posts. Delete any suspicious content and restore your original profile picture and information. Check your blocked users list and friend requests for any changes.
  7. Scan your devices for malware. Run a full antivirus scan on all devices you use to access Facebook. Update your browser and clear all stored passwords. Change passwords for any other accounts that used the same password as your Facebook account.
