How to Reset a Forgotten Google Password

A forgotten Google password locks you out of Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, and all Google services. Google's account recovery system lets you reset your password using your phone number, recovery email, or security questions.

  1. Navigate to the Google sign-in page. Go to accounts.google.com in your web browser. Click 'Sign in' if you're not already on the login screen. Enter your Gmail address or phone number in the email field, then click 'Next'.
  2. Access the password recovery option. On the password screen, click 'Forgot password?' below the password field. Google will display your account information and ask you to enter the last password you remember. If you don't remember any password, click 'Try another way'.
  3. Choose your recovery method. Google presents recovery options based on your account setup. Select 'Get a verification code' if you see your phone number ending in two digits. Choose 'Get a verification code' for your recovery email if that option appears. Click 'Try another way' to see additional options like security questions.
  4. Verify your identity. Enter the verification code sent to your phone via SMS or the code sent to your recovery email. Check your spam folder if you don't see the email within two minutes. The code expires after 10 minutes, so request a new one if needed.
  5. Create your new password. Enter a new password that's at least 8 characters long. Include a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Confirm the password by typing it again in the second field. Avoid using personal information or common words.
  6. Secure your account. Click 'Change password' to save your new password. Google automatically signs you in and displays a security checkup page. Review your recovery phone number and email address to ensure they're current. Enable 2-step verification if prompted.
