How to Recover a Hacked Instagram Account

A hacked Instagram account requires immediate action to regain control and prevent further damage. Instagram provides specific recovery tools and security measures to restore access when your account has been compromised.

  1. Try logging in with your original credentials. Open Instagram and attempt to log in with your username and password. If the hacker changed your password but not your email or phone number, you might still have access. Check if you can reset your password using the 'Forgot password?' link on the login screen.
  2. Use Instagram's account recovery form. Navigate to instagram.com/hacked on a web browser. Fill out the form with your original username, email address, or phone number. Instagram will send a security code to your registered contact method if it's still accessible.
  3. Submit a photo verification request. If standard recovery fails, use Instagram's photo verification process. Go to the login screen, tap 'Need more help?' then 'I can't access this email or phone number.' Instagram will ask you to take a photo holding a handwritten code on paper to verify your identity.
  4. Check your email for Instagram notifications. Review your email for any Instagram security alerts about password changes, email changes, or login attempts. Forward these emails to Instagram support as proof of unauthorized access. These timestamps help establish when the hack occurred.
  5. Report the hack through Facebook's help center. Since Instagram is owned by Meta, use Facebook's Help Center to report the compromised account. Go to facebook.com/help and search for 'hacked Instagram account.' Submit a detailed report including your username and any evidence of unauthorized access.
  6. Secure your recovered account immediately. Once you regain access, change your password to something unique and enable two-factor authentication in Settings > Security > Two-Factor Authentication. Remove any unauthorized linked accounts and review all authorized applications that have access to your Instagram data.
  7. Review and clean up unauthorized activity. Check your posts, stories, direct messages, and followers for any content or connections the hacker added. Delete unauthorized posts, unfollow suspicious accounts, and inform your followers about the hack. Review your account's activity log for any other changes made during the compromise.
