How to Secure Your Accounts with a Password Manager

Learn to manage, store, and auto-fill credentials securely using a password manager. Eliminate password fatigue and enhance your digital security.

  1. Create your master password. Launch your chosen password manager and select the option to create a new vault. Generate a master password that is at least 16 characters long, consisting of random words or an unpredictable string. This is the only password you must memorize; write it down in a physical, secure location.
  2. Install browser extensions and mobile apps. Navigate to the official website of your password manager to download the browser extension for your primary browser. Additionally, install the mobile application on your smartphone. Sign in to both using your account credentials to enable synchronization across your devices.
  3. Import existing credentials. If your browser has saved passwords, export them as a CSV file from your browser settings. Import this file into your password manager using the 'Import' feature found in the settings menu. Once the import is verified, delete the CSV file from your computer immediately.
  4. Replace weak passwords. Identify high-priority accounts such as email, banking, and social media. Visit each service, navigate to the password change settings, and use the 'Generate Password' feature within your browser extension. Save the new, complex credential directly into your vault.
  5. Enable auto-fill and auto-submit. Go to the settings of your password manager extension and enable 'Auto-fill'. Test the functionality by navigating to a login page for one of your updated accounts. The password manager will detect the fields and offer to fill your credentials automatically.
  6. Set up emergency access. Navigate to your account settings within the password manager and locate 'Emergency Access' or 'Recovery Kit'. Configure a trusted contact or download a recovery PDF. This ensures your digital assets remain accessible if you lose your master password or are incapacitated.
