How to Mute a Group Chat on WhatsApp

Silence notifications from a WhatsApp group chat without leaving. Mute for 8 hours, 1 week, or permanently.

1. Open WhatsApp and locate the group chat. Launch WhatsApp. Navigate to the Chats tab if not already there. Find the group chat you want to mute in your chat list.
2. Press and hold the group chat name. Long-press on the group chat name in your chat list. A context menu will appear with several options.
3. Select Mute notifications from the menu. Tap on "Mute notifications" or the mute icon that appears in the context menu.
4. Pick a mute duration. Choose how long to mute the group: 8 hours, 1 week, or Always. Select the duration that suits your needs.
5. Confirm your selection. Tap to confirm. The group chat will now be muted. You will not receive sound or vibration notifications from this group, but messages will still arrive and appear in the chat list.
6. Look for the muted indicator. In your chat list, the muted group will display a speaker icon with a slash through it next to its name, confirming the mute is active.
