How to Use Little Snitch for Mac Security
Configure Little Snitch on macOS to monitor and control network connections. Block unwanted outbound traffic and secure your Mac from data leaks.
- Download and install Little Snitch. Visit the Objective Development website and download Little Snitch 5. Open the downloaded DMG file and run the installer. Restart your Mac when prompted to complete the kernel extension installation.
- Configure initial alert settings. Open Little Snitch Configuration from Applications or the menu bar. Click Preferences and set Alert Mode to 'Show connection alert' for maximum security. Enable 'Show in silent mode' to see all connection attempts even when alerts are temporarily disabled.
- Handle your first connection alerts. Launch any application and Little Snitch will show an alert for its first network connection attempt. Click 'Deny' to block the connection or 'Allow' to permit it. Choose 'Forever' to create a permanent rule or 'Until Quit' for temporary access.
- Create specific rules for applications. In Little Snitch Configuration, select an application from the list and click the '+' button to add a new rule. Specify the server address, port, and protocol. Set the action to 'Allow' or 'Deny' and choose the duration from 'Until Quit' to 'Forever'.
- Monitor network activity in real time. Open Little Snitch Network Monitor from the menu bar to see live network connections. The left panel shows active processes, and the right panel displays their current connections. Click any connection to see transfer speeds and data amounts.
- Use Silent Mode for trusted environments. Click the Little Snitch menu bar icon and select 'Silent Mode - Allow' to temporarily allow all connections without alerts. Choose 'Silent Mode - Deny' to block all new connections. Return to 'Alert Mode' to resume interactive monitoring.
- Review and optimize your rules. Open Little Snitch Configuration and examine the Rules tab to see all your connection policies. Delete outdated rules for uninstalled applications and consolidate similar rules. Use the search function to find rules for specific domains or applications.
