How to Secure Your Accounts with an Authenticator App

Learn how to set up and manage Time-based One-Time Passwords (TOTP) using an authenticator app for enhanced account security.

  1. Install your preferred authenticator app. Download a reputable authenticator application from the App Store or Google Play Store. Highly recommended options include 2FAS, Raivo OTP, or Microsoft Authenticator for their reliability and backup features.
  2. Enable 2FA in your account settings. Log into the service you wish to secure via a desktop browser. Navigate to Security or Login settings and locate the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) or Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) section. Select Authenticator App as your primary verification method.
  3. Scan the provided QR code. A QR code will appear on your computer screen. Open your chosen authenticator app on your mobile device, tap the plus (+) or Add icon, and select Scan QR Code. Align the camera with your screen to register the account automatically.
  4. Verify the connection. The app will immediately generate a six-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds. Input this code into the verification field on your computer screen to confirm the link between your account and the app.
  5. Save your recovery codes. The service will provide a list of one-time recovery codes. Copy these codes and store them in a secure physical location or a password manager. These are your only access path if you lose your mobile device.
