How to Use 1Password for Beginners
Learn to set up and use 1Password password manager. Create vaults, save passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and secure your digital life.
- Download and install 1Password. Visit 1password.com and download the app for your operating system. Install the desktop app first, then add the browser extension for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge. The browser extension handles automatic password filling and saving.
- Create your 1Password account. Open the app and select 'Get started'. Choose a strong Master Password — this is the only password you'll need to remember. Write down your Secret Key when prompted and store it safely offline. This 34-character code helps encrypt your data and recover your account.
- Set up your first vault. 1Password creates a 'Private' vault by default for personal passwords. Click the vault dropdown in the sidebar to create additional vaults like 'Work' or 'Shared' if needed. Each vault can have different access permissions and sharing settings.
- Save your first password. Click the '+' button and select 'Login'. Enter the website URL, your username, and password. 1Password automatically categorizes the entry and adds relevant fields. Use the password generator by clicking the refresh icon to create strong, unique passwords for new accounts.
- Import existing passwords. Go to File > Import and select your current password manager or browser. 1Password supports imports from Chrome, Safari, Firefox, LastPass, Dashlane, and CSV files. Review imported entries and delete duplicates or update weak passwords using the Security section.
- Enable browser autofill. Install the 1Password browser extension and sign in with your account. The extension icon appears in your browser toolbar. On websites, click login fields and select the 1Password suggestion, or use Ctrl+Shift+X (Cmd+Shift+X on Mac) to open the extension popup.
- Set up two-factor authentication. For important accounts, add two-factor authentication codes directly to 1Password. When setting up 2FA on a website, scan the QR code with 1Password instead of a separate authenticator app. This keeps your password and 2FA code together for seamless login.
