How to Set Up Bitwarden Password Manager
Complete guide to installing and configuring Bitwarden password manager across all devices. Secure setup in minutes with master password and vault sync.
- Create your Bitwarden account. Navigate to bitwarden.com and click Sign Up. Enter your email address and create a strong master password—this is the only password you'll need to remember. Bitwarden cannot recover your master password if lost, so write it down and store it securely. Verify your email address when prompted.
- Install the browser extension. Open your browser's extension store (Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons, or Safari Extensions). Search for Bitwarden and install the official extension. Pin the Bitwarden icon to your toolbar for easy access. Log in with your email and master password when the extension launches.
- Download the mobile app. Install Bitwarden from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Open the app and log in with your credentials. Enable biometric unlock in Settings > Security > Unlock with Biometrics to use Face ID, Touch ID, or fingerprint authentication instead of typing your master password each time.
- Import existing passwords. Access the web vault at vault.bitwarden.com and navigate to Tools > Import Data. Select your current password manager from the dropdown menu and follow the export instructions for your previous manager. Upload the exported file to transfer all passwords at once.
- Configure security settings. In the web vault, go to Settings > Security. Enable two-factor authentication using an authenticator app like Authy or Google Authenticator. Set up vault timeout to lock automatically after a specified period of inactivity. Enable Vault Timeout Action to log out completely rather than just lock.
- Generate and save your first password. Navigate to any login page and click the Bitwarden extension icon. Click the plus symbol to add a new item. Enter the website URL, username, and click the generate button next to the password field. Adjust the generator settings for length and character types, then save the entry. The password will automatically fill when you visit the site.
- Set up desktop app sync. Download the Bitwarden desktop application for Windows, macOS, or Linux from bitwarden.com. Install and log in to sync your vault across all devices. Enable automatic sync in Settings to keep passwords updated in real-time across browser, mobile, and desktop apps.
