How to Set Up 1Password

Secure your digital life. Follow these steps to install, configure, and initialize your 1Password account for robust password management.

  1. Download and install the application. Navigate to the official 1Password website and select the Get 1Password button. Choose the version corresponding to your operating system and execute the installer package to add the application to your local system.
  2. Create your account. Launch 1Password and select Create Account. Enter your email address and verify your identity via the six-digit code sent to your inbox, then complete the subscription payment process.
  3. Save your Secret Key. 1Password generates a unique 34-character Secret Key. Download the Emergency Kit PDF or copy the key to a secure, offline location immediately as this is required to authorize any new device.
  4. Define your Master Password. Create a strong, unique Master Password to unlock your vault. This password is known only to you and cannot be reset by 1Password servers, making it the primary barrier to your data.
  5. Install the browser extension. Open your preferred web browser and navigate to the extension store. Locate the 1Password extension, install it, and sign in to link the extension with your local desktop application.
  6. Enable biometrics. Open the 1Password settings menu and navigate to Security. Toggle on Touch ID or Face ID support to allow for faster vault unlocking on supported hardware.
