How to Scan Your Computer for Malware
Follow this guide to identify and remove malicious software from your Windows or macOS system using built-in security tools.
- Update your operating system. Before scanning, ensure your security definitions are current. On Windows, navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. On macOS, go to System Settings > General > Software Update to install the latest security patches.
- Initiate a scan on Windows. Open the Windows Security app from the Start menu. Navigate to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, and choose Full scan. Click Scan now to initiate a comprehensive check of all files and running programs.
- Run a scan on macOS. macOS utilizes XProtect for real-time protection. To verify system integrity, run a check using Terminal by typing 'tccutil reset All' followed by a restart. For deep scanning, use a trusted third-party security utility specifically designed for macOS, such as Malwarebytes for Mac.
- Analyze detection results. Once the scan completes, the interface will display a list of detected threats. Carefully review each item to ensure it is not a false positive. Select the recommended action, typically labeled as Quarantine or Remove, for all confirmed malicious files.
- Clear temporary files. Many malware strains hide in temporary directories. After removing threats, empty the Recycle Bin or Trash to ensure deleted malicious components are permanently purged from your storage volume.
- Verify browser security. Malware often installs unauthorized extensions. Open your browser settings, navigate to Extensions, and remove any items you do not recognize. Reset your browser startup page to your preferred default.
