How to Generate and Secure Strong Passwords

Learn the professional standard for creating, managing, and securing complex passwords to protect your digital identity from unauthorized access.

1. Install a password manager. Do not rely on browser-based password saving or manual memorization. Download and install a dedicated, encrypted password manager such as 1Password, Bitwarden, or iCloud Keychain to generate and store unique credentials for every account.
2. Generate unique, high-entropy strings. Use the built-in generator within your password manager to create passwords with at least 16 characters. Ensure the setting includes a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special symbols.
3. Assign unique credentials to every service. Log in to your web accounts and navigate to the Account Settings or Security menu. Replace existing passwords with the new, unique strings generated in the previous step, ensuring no two services share the same password.
4. Enable multi-factor authentication. Navigate to the Security settings of your accounts and enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Prefer hardware security keys or authenticator apps (TOTP) over SMS-based codes for superior security.
5. Audit your password health. Open your password manager and run the built-in security audit or health check tool. Identify and replace any reused, weak, or leaked passwords flagged by the system immediately.
