How to Restore a Previous Version of a Google Doc

Restore previous versions of Google Docs to recover deleted text or revert unwanted edits using the Version History tool.

  1. Open the Version History panel. Open your document in a web browser. Select File from the top menu, click Version history, and then select See version history.
  2. Locate the target timestamp. Use the right-hand sidebar to browse the list of previous save states organized by date and time. Click on any timestamp to view the document's state at that specific moment.
  3. Verify the document content. Review the highlighted text within the main window to confirm the version contains the data you intend to restore. Ensure you are viewing the desired state before proceeding to the recovery step.
  4. Restore the version. Click the blue Restore this version button located at the top-left of the interface. Confirm the action in the secondary pop-up window to finalize the revert.
  5. Confirm restoration. The document will refresh automatically to reflect the restored state. Any changes made after the selected timestamp are now removed from the live document.
