How to Use Audacity for Audio Editing

Learn essential Audacity audio editing techniques including recording, cutting, effects, and exporting. Complete step-by-step guide for beginners.

  1. Import your audio file. Launch Audacity and go to File > Import > Audio. Navigate to your audio file and click Open. The waveform appears in the main window with amplitude displayed vertically and time horizontally. Audacity supports MP3, WAV, FLAC, and most common audio formats.
  2. Navigate and select audio segments. Click anywhere on the waveform to position the playhead. Click and drag to select a portion of audio—the selected area highlights in lighter color. Use the spacebar to play or pause. Hold Shift and click to extend your selection to that point.
  3. Cut and trim unwanted sections. Select the audio segment you want to remove and press Delete or go to Edit > Delete. To trim and keep only your selection, use Edit > Trim or press Ctrl+T. Use Edit > Undo (Ctrl+Z) if you make a mistake—Audacity maintains unlimited undo history.
  4. Adjust volume levels. Select your audio and go to Effect > Amplify to boost or reduce overall volume. The default setting normalizes to maximum volume without clipping. For gradual volume changes, use Effect > Fade In or Fade Out. The Envelope Tool (F2) lets you create custom volume curves by clicking and dragging control points.
  5. Remove background noise. Select a portion that contains only background noise (no speech or music). Go to Effect > Noise Reduction and click Get Noise Profile. Then select the entire audio track and return to Effect > Noise Reduction. Click OK to apply the noise reduction using the captured profile.
  6. Apply audio effects. Select your target audio and browse the Effects menu for options like Reverb, Echo, or Equalization. Each effect opens a preview window where you can adjust parameters and hear the result before applying. Click Preview to test a few seconds, then OK to apply to your selection.
  7. Export your finished audio. Go to File > Export > Export Audio to save your project as an audio file. Choose your format (MP3 for web, WAV for high quality, FLAC for lossless compression). Adjust quality settings in the dialog box, add metadata if needed, then click Export to save your file.
