How to Use Telegram Channels and Groups

Learn to create, join, and manage Telegram channels and groups. Master privacy settings, admin controls, and engagement features for effective communication.

  1. Create a new channel or group. Open Telegram and tap the compose button (pencil icon on mobile, plus icon on desktop). Select 'New Channel' for one-way broadcasting or 'New Group' for interactive discussions. Enter a name, optional description, and choose privacy settings. Public channels get custom usernames, while private ones use invite links.
  2. Configure privacy and permissions. Access channel or group settings through the three-dot menu. Set the channel to public with a custom @username for discoverability, or keep it private for invite-only access. For groups, enable 'All Members Are Admins' for open participation, or restrict permissions to control who can add members, pin messages, or change group info.
  3. Add members and subscribers. Tap 'Add Members' in group settings or share your channel's public link for subscriptions. Import contacts directly from your phone, share the join link via other platforms, or use the channel's QR code for quick access. Groups support up to 200,000 members, while channels have unlimited subscribers.
  4. Customize notification settings. Access notification settings through the channel or group profile. Disable notifications entirely, customize alert sounds, or set quiet hours for scheduled silence. Enable 'Mentions Only' in busy groups to receive notifications only when directly tagged. Pin important messages to keep them visible at the top of the chat.
  5. Manage content and moderation. Post messages using formatting options like bold, italic, or code blocks with markdown syntax. Schedule posts by holding the send button and selecting a future time. Delete messages for everyone within 48 hours, or enable auto-delete for temporary conversations. Use admin rights to pin messages, restrict users, or delete inappropriate content.
  6. Use advanced features. Create polls for group decisions using the attachment menu. Set up bots for automated responses, moderation, or integration with external services. Use hashtags in channels for content organization and searchability. Enable chat folders to organize multiple channels and groups into custom categories.
  7. Monitor and analyze performance. Check channel statistics in the three-dot menu to view subscriber growth, post reach, and engagement rates. Review member activity in group info to identify active participants. Use message view counts to gauge content effectiveness and adjust posting strategies accordingly.
