How to Use Signal for Private Messaging
Learn how to set up and use Signal for secure, encrypted messaging. Complete guide to private communication features and settings.
- Download and install Signal. Download Signal from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). For desktop, visit signal.org and download the app for Windows, macOS, or Linux. The app is free and requires no subscription.
- Verify your phone number. Open Signal and enter your phone number when prompted. Signal will send a six-digit verification code via SMS. Enter this code to verify your account. Your phone number serves as your Signal username.
- Set up your profile. Tap the profile icon in the top-left corner, then tap the pencil icon to edit. Add your name and optional profile picture. Enable or disable profile sharing with contacts. Your name appears to people who message you.
- Enable disappearing messages. Open any conversation and tap the contact name at the top. Select 'Disappearing messages' and choose a timer from 5 seconds to 1 week. Messages automatically delete after the set time. This applies to all future messages in the conversation.
- Start an encrypted conversation. Tap the compose button (pen icon) and select a contact who also has Signal installed. Signal contacts display a small Signal icon next to their name. Type your message and tap send. All Signal-to-Signal messages are automatically encrypted.
- Configure privacy settings. Go to Settings > Privacy. Enable 'Screen Lock' to require authentication when opening Signal. Turn off 'Read receipts' to prevent others from seeing when you've read their messages. Disable 'Typing indicators' to hide when you're composing messages.
- Verify safety numbers for enhanced security. Open any conversation, tap the contact name, then select 'Verify safety number.' Compare the 60-digit number with your contact in person or through another secure channel. Mark as verified if numbers match. This confirms you're communicating directly with your intended contact.
