  1. Create your Discord account. Visit discord.com and click 'Open Discord in your browser' or download the desktop app. Click 'Register' and enter your email, username, and password. Verify your email address through the confirmation message Discord sends to your inbox.
  2. Join your first server. Click the '+' icon in the left sidebar and select 'Join a Server'. Enter an invite link or browse Discord's public server directory. Click 'Join Server' to become a member of that community.
  3. Navigate channels and send messages. Servers contain text channels (marked with #) and voice channels (marked with speaker icons). Click any text channel to view its messages. Type in the message box at the bottom and press Enter to send. Use @ followed by a username to mention someone directly.
  4. Join voice channels. Click any voice channel name to join it automatically. Your username will appear in the channel member list. Use the microphone and speaker icons at the bottom of your screen to mute yourself or adjust audio. Click 'Disconnect' or press Ctrl + Shift + D to leave.
  5. Customize your profile and notifications. Click the gear icon next to your username to access User Settings. Upload a profile picture in 'My Account' and set your status in 'Activity Status'. Navigate to 'Notifications' to control which messages trigger alerts and sounds.
  6. Learn essential keyboard shortcuts. Press Ctrl + K to open Quick Switcher for fast channel navigation. Use Ctrl + Shift + M to toggle mute, Ctrl + Shift + D to disconnect from voice, and Ctrl + I to toggle channel member list. Press Tab to cycle through recent mentions and reactions.
