How to Set Up WhatsApp on Multiple Devices
Set up WhatsApp on multiple devices including phones, tablets, and computers. Step-by-step guide for linking devices and managing multi-device access.
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version. Open your phone's app store and update WhatsApp to the most recent version. The multi-device feature requires WhatsApp version 2.21.4.18 or later on Android, and 2.21.60 or later on iPhone. Restart the app after updating.
- Enable multi-device beta on your primary phone. Open WhatsApp on your primary phone, tap the three dots menu (Android) or Settings (iPhone), then select Linked Devices. Tap Multi-device beta and select Join Beta. WhatsApp will prepare your account for multi-device use, which takes 30-60 seconds.
- Link your first additional device. On the device you want to link, open WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp Desktop app, or install WhatsApp on a tablet. Select Link a Device or scan the QR code option. On your primary phone, go to Linked Devices and tap Link a Device to display the QR code.
- Scan the QR code to complete linking. Use your secondary device's camera to scan the QR code displayed on your primary phone. The devices will connect automatically and begin syncing recent chat history. This process typically takes 1-3 minutes depending on your message history size.
- Repeat linking process for additional devices. Return to Linked Devices on your primary phone to add more devices. You can link up to 4 additional devices total. Each device requires its own QR code scan and will sync independently with your main account.
- Verify device synchronization. Send a test message from your primary phone and confirm it appears on all linked devices within 10-15 seconds. Check that you can send messages from any linked device and see them update across all platforms in real-time.
- Configure device-specific notification settings. Open WhatsApp settings on each device and customize notification preferences independently. You can mute notifications on secondary devices while keeping them active on your primary phone, or set different notification tones for each device.
