How to Fix Zoom Microphone Problems
Resolve microphone audio issues on Zoom with these precise troubleshooting steps for desktop and mobile applications.
- Confirm the mute status and input device. Check the microphone icon in the bottom-left corner of the Zoom meeting window. If a red slash is visible, click the icon to unmute. Click the caret (^) icon next to the microphone to ensure the correct hardware is selected under Select a Microphone.
- Grant system-level microphone permissions. Navigate to System Settings on your computer, then select Privacy & Security, followed by Microphone. Locate Zoom in the list of applications and toggle the switch to the ON position. You must restart the Zoom application for these changes to take effect.
- Run the internal audio test. Open Zoom settings by clicking your profile icon and selecting Settings, then navigate to the Audio tab. Click the Test Mic button to record a brief audio sample. If you cannot hear the playback, adjust the Input Level slider or switch the Input Device to an alternative hardware source.
- Disable signal processing effects. Within the Zoom Audio settings, navigate to Suppress background noise. Change the setting to Low or Disable it entirely. Some external microphones conflict with Zoom’s high-performance echo cancellation algorithms.
- Clear conflicting audio processes. Quit all applications that use the microphone, such as Slack, Discord, or web browsers. Re-launch Zoom to ensure it has exclusive access to the audio driver. If the issue persists, perform a full system restart to clear the audio controller cache.
