How to Fix Discord Not Connecting

Fix Discord connection issues with these proven troubleshooting steps. Resolve server outages, network problems, and app conflicts quickly.

  1. Check Discord's server status. Navigate to discordstatus.com in your web browser. Look for any ongoing outages or maintenance affecting your region. If Discord reports server issues, wait for the service to be restored before proceeding with other fixes.
  2. Restart your internet connection. Unplug your router and modem for 30 seconds, then plug them back in. Wait 2-3 minutes for full connectivity to restore. Test your internet connection by loading a webpage, then launch Discord to check if the connection issue is resolved.
  3. Disable VPN and proxy connections. Turn off any active VPN or proxy services on your device. Discord blocks connections from many VPN servers and proxy networks. Close the VPN application completely and restart Discord to establish a direct connection.
  4. Run Discord as administrator. Right-click the Discord icon on Windows and select 'Run as administrator'. On Mac, hold Command while opening Discord and enter your admin password when prompted. This grants Discord full network permissions to bypass system restrictions.
  5. Clear Discord's cache and data. Close Discord completely. Press Windows + R, type %appdata% and press Enter. Navigate to the Discord folder and delete the Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache folders. Restart Discord to rebuild fresh cache files.
  6. Configure Windows Firewall exceptions. Open Windows Security and click Firewall & network protection. Select 'Allow an app through firewall' and find Discord in the list. Check both Private and Public network boxes for Discord. If Discord isn't listed, click 'Allow another app' and browse to Discord.exe.
  7. Reinstall Discord completely. Uninstall Discord through Windows Settings > Apps or Applications folder on Mac. Download the latest version from discord.com and run the installer. Log in with your credentials to restore your servers and settings.
