How to Configure Firefox for Maximum Privacy
Configure Firefox browser settings, extensions, and features to protect your privacy while browsing. Complete guide for enhanced security.
- Enable Enhanced Tracking Protection. Open Firefox and click the menu button (three lines) in the top right. Select Settings, then Privacy & Security from the left sidebar. Under Enhanced Tracking Protection, select 'Strict' instead of 'Standard'. This blocks social media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies, fingerprinting, and cryptominers.
- Disable telemetry and data sharing. Scroll down to 'Firefox Data Collection and Use' in Privacy & Security settings. Uncheck 'Allow Firefox to send technical and interaction data to Mozilla' and 'Allow Firefox to install and run studies'. Also uncheck 'Allow Firefox to send backlogged crash reports' if present.
- Configure DNS over HTTPS. In Privacy & Security settings, scroll to 'DNS over HTTPS'. Select 'Increased Protection' and choose 'Cloudflare' or 'NextDNS' from the dropdown. This encrypts your DNS requests, preventing your ISP from seeing which websites you visit.
- Adjust cookie and site data settings. Under 'Cookies and Site Data', select 'Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed' for maximum privacy. Alternatively, click 'Manage Exceptions' to allow cookies only for sites where you want to stay logged in. Set 'Cross-site tracking cookies' to block all.
- Disable location and camera permissions. Scroll to 'Permissions' and click 'Settings' next to Location, Camera, Microphone, and Notifications. Set each to 'Block new requests asking to access' and remove any existing permissions you don't need. This prevents websites from accessing these features without explicit permission.
- Install uBlock Origin extension. Click the menu button, select 'Add-ons and themes', then 'Find more add-ons'. Search for 'uBlock Origin' and click 'Add to Firefox'. After installation, click the uBlock Origin icon and ensure all filter lists are enabled in the settings dashboard.
- Modify about:config for advanced privacy. Type 'about:config' in the address bar and accept the warning. Search for 'privacy.resistFingerprinting' and set it to 'true'. Also set 'network.cookie.sameSite.laxByDefault' to 'true' and 'privacy.trackingprotection.fingerprinting.enabled' to 'true'. These settings reduce browser fingerprinting.
- Configure search engine and disable suggestions. In Settings, go to 'Search' and change your default search engine to DuckDuckGo or Startpage. Uncheck 'Provide search suggestions' and 'Show search suggestions in address bar results'. Also disable 'Show search suggestions ahead of browsing history in address bar results'.
