How to Use Browser Reading Mode

Enable and use reading mode in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge to eliminate distractions and improve readability on any webpage.

  1. Check if the webpage supports reading mode. Navigate to an article or text-heavy webpage. Reading mode only activates on pages with substantial text content like news articles, blog posts, or documentation. Social media feeds, search results, and homepage layouts typically won't trigger reading mode availability.
  2. Enable reading mode in Safari. Click the reader icon (lines of text) in the left side of the address bar, or press Command+Shift+R. The page transforms into a clean, formatted view with just the article text. Safari's reading mode also works across iPhone and iPad with the same icon.
  3. Activate reading mode in Firefox. Click the document icon that appears in the address bar on compatible pages, or press F9. Firefox calls this Reader View and displays a simplified version of the article with customizable fonts and colors.
  4. Use Immersive Reader in Edge. Click the book icon in the address bar or press F9 to launch Microsoft's Immersive Reader. This enhanced reading mode includes text-to-speech capabilities and reading comprehension tools alongside distraction-free formatting.
  5. Access reading mode in Chrome. Chrome doesn't have native reading mode, but you can enable the experimental flag by navigating to chrome://flags and searching for "Enable Reader Mode." Toggle it on and restart Chrome. The feature then works similarly to other browsers with an icon in the address bar.
  6. Customize reading mode appearance. Most browsers let you adjust font size, typeface, background color, and text spacing within reading mode. Look for an "Aa" button or gear icon while in reading mode to access these typography controls.
  7. Exit reading mode. Click the same icon you used to enter reading mode, press the designated keyboard shortcut again, or click the X button typically located in the top corner of the reading view. The page returns to its original layout with all elements restored.
