How to Fix Browser Using Too Much Memory

Reduce browser memory usage with these proven steps. Close unused tabs, disable extensions, clear cache, and optimize browser settings to free up RAM.

  1. Close unnecessary tabs and windows. Right-click on tabs you don't need and select Close Tab, or use Ctrl+W (Windows) or Cmd+W (Mac). Close entire browser windows with Ctrl+Shift+W or Cmd+Shift+W. Each open tab consumes memory even when inactive, so keep only essential tabs open.
  2. Check Task Manager for memory-hungry tabs. In Chrome, press Shift+Esc to open the built-in Task Manager. In Firefox, type about:memory in the address bar. In Edge, use Shift+Esc or go to Settings > System. Identify tabs or extensions using excessive memory and close or disable them.
  3. Disable or remove unused extensions. Navigate to your browser's extension management page: Chrome (chrome://extensions/), Firefox (about:addons), or Edge (edge://extensions/). Turn off extensions you rarely use by clicking the toggle switch. Remove extensions completely by clicking Remove or the trash icon.
  4. Clear browsing data and cache. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+Delete (Mac) to open the Clear Browsing Data dialog. Select Cached images and files, Cookies and site data, and set the time range to All time. Click Clear data or Clear browsing data.
  5. Enable hardware acceleration. In Chrome, go to Settings > Advanced > System and toggle Use hardware acceleration when available. In Firefox, go to Settings > General > Performance and uncheck Use recommended performance settings, then check Use hardware acceleration when available. Restart your browser after making changes.
  6. Adjust memory management settings. In Chrome, type chrome://flags/ in the address bar and search for memory-saver. Enable Memory Saver mode. In Firefox, type about:config and set browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory to true. In Edge, go to Settings > System and enable Efficiency mode.
  7. Restart the browser completely. Close all browser windows and wait 10 seconds before reopening. Alternatively, use your browser's restart feature: Chrome (chrome://restart/), Firefox (about:restartrequired), or Edge (edge://restart/). This clears temporary memory allocations and resets the browser's memory usage.
