How to Manage Multiple Desktops in Windows
Master Windows Virtual Desktops to organize your workspace, isolate projects, and boost productivity with keyboard shortcuts and Task View management.
- Open the Task View interface. Access your virtual desktops by clicking the Task View icon located on the taskbar, usually to the right of the Search icon. Alternatively, press the Windows key + Tab to trigger the overlay instantly.
- Generate a new virtual desktop. Within the Task View pane, locate the plus sign icon labeled New desktop at the top of the screen. Click this button to create a blank workspace. You may repeat this action to spawn multiple desktops as required.
- Move windows between desktops. Open Task View and hover your cursor over the preview of the desktop containing the app you wish to move. Right-click the app window thumbnail, select Move to, and choose the destination desktop from the list.
- Switch between active desktops. Use keyboard shortcuts to cycle through your virtual desktops without entering the Task View menu. Hold down the Windows key and Control, then use the Left or Right arrow keys to jump between workspaces.
- Rename your virtual desktops. In Task View, click the text label (e.g., Desktop 1) above the workspace preview. Type a descriptive name, such as Work, Personal, or Projects, to keep your environment organized. Press Enter to save the name.
- Close an unnecessary desktop. Enter Task View and hover your cursor over the desktop you wish to remove. Click the X icon in the top-right corner of the thumbnail. Any applications remaining in that desktop will be moved to the primary desktop.
