How to Split Screen on an iPad

Split your iPad screen to run two apps side by side. Works on iPadOS 9 and later with Step Over, Slide Over, and Split View.

  1. Open the first app. Launch the first app you want to use on your iPad. This app will occupy one side of the screen. Ensure the app is fully loaded and in focus before proceeding to the next step.
  2. Swipe up from the bottom to open the Dock. Swipe upward from the bottom edge of your iPad screen to reveal the Dock. The Dock appears as a horizontal bar containing your frequently used and favorite apps. Hold this gesture momentarily if the Dock does not appear immediately.
  3. Find the second app in the Dock. Identify the app you want to open in Split View within the Dock. If it is not visible, swipe left or right in the Dock to scroll through additional apps. You can also drag any app from your Home Screen into the Dock before starting.
  4. Drag the second app to the edge of the screen. Press and hold the second app in the Dock, then drag it to either the left or right edge of your screen. Drag slowly and deliberately to the outer edge. The screen will highlight a drop zone indicating where the app will open in Split View.
  5. Resize the split by dragging the divider. A vertical or horizontal divider appears between the two apps. Drag this divider toward either edge to allocate more screen space to one app. Drag left to give more space to the right app, or right to give more space to the left app.
  6. Switch focus between apps by tapping. Tap anywhere in one app to bring it to focus. The focused app receives keyboard input and system interactions. Tap the other app to switch focus. Both apps remain active and visible simultaneously regardless of which is focused.
  7. Close Split View by dragging the divider to the edge. To return to single-app mode, drag the divider all the way to either edge of the screen. The hidden app exits Split View and returns to the background. The remaining app expands to full screen.
