How to Back Up Windows Settings and Configuration
Secure your Windows configuration before making system changes. Follow this guide to export your settings and create a restore point effectively.
- Enable System Protection. Press the Windows key and type Create a restore point. Select the result to open System Properties, navigate to the System Protection tab, and verify that your system drive is set to On under Protection Settings. Click Configure if protection is disabled, select Turn on system protection, and set the Disk Space Usage slider to 5%.
- Create a Manual Restore Point. Within the System Protection tab, click the Create button at the bottom. Provide a descriptive name that includes the current date and the specific system state, then click Create to capture your current settings. Wait for the confirmation dialog before proceeding to ensure the shadow copy is finalized.
- Sync Settings via Microsoft Account. Open Settings, navigate to Accounts, and select Windows backup. Ensure Remember my apps and Remember my preferences are toggled to On. This pushes your system theme, language preferences, and browser history to your Microsoft account cloud storage.
- Export Registry Settings. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor. Right-click on Computer at the top of the sidebar and select Export to save a comprehensive .reg backup file to an external drive. This file acts as a total snapshot of your system configuration and preferences.
- Verify External Backup Integrity. Disconnect your external drive and reconnect it to confirm the file exists and is readable. Double-check that the file size is non-zero, indicating a successful write operation. Store this drive in a secure location away from the primary workstation until your system changes are confirmed stable.
