How to Protect Your Saved Passwords in Windows
Secure your browser and system credentials on Windows with Windows Hello and account-level authentication. Stop unauthorized access to saved passwords.
- Require sign-in for browser password access. Open Microsoft Edge and select the 'Settings and more' ellipsis menu in the top right corner. Navigate to Settings, then click Profiles and select Passwords. Toggle the 'Require Windows Hello when filling or viewing passwords' switch to On.
- Enable Windows Hello authentication. Press Win + I to open Settings. Select Accounts, then Sign-in options. Ensure that 'For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device' is toggled to On.
- Secure local user accounts. Navigate to Settings > Accounts > Your info. Ensure your local account is protected by a strong, unique password. If you use a standard local account, verify that a PIN or Face/Fingerprint auth is active through the Sign-in options menu.
- Configure dynamic lock. In Settings, go to Accounts > Sign-in options > Dynamic lock. Check the box labeled 'Allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you're away.' Pair your smartphone to the PC via Bluetooth to ensure the system locks when you move out of range.
- Use the manual lock command. Always lock your workstation when stepping away from the keyboard. Use the designated keyboard shortcut to immediately suspend your session and require authentication to resume work.
