How to Migrate Your Password Manager to a New PC

A precise guide to migrating password manager data to a new Windows PC, ensuring your credentials transfer securely without data loss.

  1. Export your existing database. Open your current password manager application on the source PC. Navigate to File > Export or Settings > Data Management, then select the option to export as a CSV or an encrypted vault file. Save the file to a secure, temporary location.
  2. Verify master credentials. Ensure you have the master password and any multi-factor authentication (MFA) recovery keys available. Without these, the imported database will remain inaccessible on the new device.
  3. Install the manager on the new PC. Download the latest version of your password manager directly from the official developer website on the new PC. Run the installer and sign in to your primary account to initialize the application environment.
  4. Import your credential database. Within the application, navigate to File > Import or Settings > Import Data. Select the file format that matches the one exported in Step 1. Follow the on-screen prompts to map your fields and finalize the import process.
  5. Authorize the new device. Enter your master password when prompted by the application. If your account is protected by MFA, provide the security code from your authenticator app to authorize the new PC as a trusted device.
  6. Secure and wipe temporary files. Locate the temporary file exported in Step 1. Use a file shredder utility or perform a secure delete command to ensure the file is permanently unrecoverable from the storage medium.
