How to Transfer Files from an External Drive to a Windows 11 PC

Learn the fastest, most reliable method to migrate your data from an external hard drive to a new Windows 11 PC using File Explorer.

  1. Connect the external drive. Plug the external hard drive into an available USB port on your PC. If the drive requires an external power source, ensure it is connected to a wall outlet before plugging the data cable into the computer.
  2. Open File Explorer. Press the Windows key to open the Start menu, type File Explorer, and press Enter. Locate your external drive in the left-hand navigation pane under This PC.
  3. Select files for transfer. Navigate to the folders or files you wish to move on the external drive. Use Ctrl + Click to select individual items or Ctrl + A to select everything within the current directory.
  4. Copy the selection. Once the items are highlighted, press Ctrl + C on your keyboard to copy the files to the system clipboard. Do not cut the files if you intend to keep a backup on the source drive.
  5. Navigate to the destination folder. In the File Explorer navigation pane, select the folder on your local PC where you want the data stored. Common locations include Documents, Pictures, or a custom folder on the C: drive.
  6. Paste the data. Press Ctrl + V to initiate the transfer process. A dialog box will appear displaying the progress; wait for the progress bar to complete before disconnecting the external drive.
  7. Safely remove the drive. In the taskbar's system tray, click the Safely Remove Hardware icon. Select the Eject option for your external drive to ensure all write processes are finished before unplugging the device.
