How to Free Up Storage Space on Windows

Clear storage space on Windows using Disk Cleanup, Storage Sense, and manual file removal. Reclaim gigabytes in minutes with these built-in tools.

  1. Run Disk Cleanup for system files. Press Windows key + R, type 'cleanmgr' and press Enter. Select your main drive (usually C:), then click 'Clean up system files' for administrator access. Check all boxes including 'Previous Windows installations' and 'Windows Update Cleanup', then click OK and Delete Files.
  2. Enable and configure Storage Sense. Go to Settings > System > Storage and toggle on Storage Sense. Click 'Configure Storage Sense or run it now', then set it to run automatically every week. Enable 'Delete temporary files' and set Downloads folder cleanup to 30 days. Click 'Clean now' to run immediately.
  3. Clear temporary files manually. Press Windows key + R, type '%temp%' and press Enter. Select all files with Ctrl + A and delete them. Some files may show permission errors—skip these. Next, type 'prefetch' in the same Run dialog and delete those files too.
  4. Uninstall unused programs and features. Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features and sort by Size to see largest programs first. Uninstall programs you no longer use by clicking them and selecting Uninstall. For older programs, go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
  5. Move files to external storage or cloud. Open File Explorer and navigate to Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and Downloads folders. Sort by Size and move large files you rarely access to an external drive or upload them to OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox. Delete the local copies after confirming successful transfer.
  6. Clear browser cache and downloads. In Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + Delete, select 'All time' and check 'Cached images and files'. In Edge, use the same shortcut and select 'All time' with 'Cached images and files' checked. Also check your browser's Downloads folder and delete old files.
  7. Use compact OS compression. Open Command Prompt as Administrator by right-clicking the Start button. Type 'compact /compactos:always' and press Enter. Wait for the process to complete—this compresses system files and can save 2-4GB of space.
