Verifying OneDrive Sync Status Before Migrating to a New PC

Ensure all files are synced to the cloud before migrating to a new PC. Follow these steps to verify OneDrive status and prevent data loss.

  1. Check the OneDrive system tray icon. Locate the blue cloud icon in the taskbar corner. If you do not see it, click the upward arrow icon to reveal hidden icons. A white or blue cloud icon indicates that OneDrive is running and connected.
  2. Confirm 'Up to date' status. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray. Observe the status message at the top of the OneDrive flyout menu. It must display 'Up to date' to confirm all local changes have been successfully uploaded to the server.
  3. Review individual folder sync states. Open File Explorer and navigate to your OneDrive folder. Check the 'Status' column for your files and folders. Items marked with a solid green circle and a white checkmark are fully synced and locally available.
  4. Verify files on the web. Open your preferred web browser and navigate to the OneDrive web portal. Log in with your Microsoft account and verify that your critical folders and documents appear exactly as they do in your local File Explorer. This serves as the definitive proof of successful synchronization.
  5. Pause sync and sign out. Once confirmed, click the OneDrive icon, select the gear icon, and choose 'Pause syncing'. Finally, go to Settings within the OneDrive app, select the 'Account' tab, and click 'Unlink this PC'. This prevents new changes from occurring on the old machine during the migration.
