How to Locate and Verify Game Save Files on Windows
Locate and verify your game save files on a new Windows PC. Follow this step-by-step guide to ensure your progress is correctly synced and stored.
- Enable hidden file visibility. Many game developers store save data in the AppData folder, which is hidden by default. Open File Explorer, select the View menu, hover over Show, and select Hidden items to ensure these directories are visible.
- Access the common save locations. Most games save progress in one of three directories: your Documents folder, the %LOCALAPPDATA% folder, or the %APPDATA% folder. Press Windows Key + R, type the respective folder path, and press Enter to open the directory directly.
- Verify Steam Cloud synchronization. Launch the Steam client and navigate to your Library. Right-click the game title, select Properties, and verify that the Steam Cloud toggle is enabled under the General tab to ensure remote saves are downloaded.
- Check Xbox app save data. If playing via PC Game Pass, saves are managed through the Xbox cloud automatically. Navigate to the Xbox app, select your profile icon, and ensure you are signed into the correct Microsoft account that holds the original save data.
- Launch and confirm in-game status. Open the game executable and navigate to the main menu. Select the Load Game or Continue option to verify that your most recent timestamps appear correctly in the selection list.
