How to Set Up Windows Backup

Set up automatic Windows backup to protect your files and system. Complete guide for File History and system image backup configuration.

  1. Connect an external drive. Connect a USB external drive or network drive with at least 500GB of free space. Windows will use this drive to store your backup files. The drive should have more storage capacity than your computer's used space.
  2. Open Backup settings. Press Windows + I to open Settings. Click Update & Security, then select Backup from the left sidebar. You'll see options for File History and other backup tools.
  3. Enable File History. Under "Back up using File History," click "Add a drive" and select your external drive from the list. Windows will automatically start backing up your Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Videos, and Music folders every hour.
  4. Configure backup frequency. Click "More options" under File History settings. Set "Back up my files" to your preferred frequency (every 10 minutes to daily). Set "Keep my backups" to determine how long to retain old backup versions.
  5. Add or exclude folders. In the backup options screen, click "Add a folder" to include additional directories in your backup. Use "Exclude these folders" to remove specific locations like temporary files or large media folders you don't need backed up.
  6. Create a system image backup. Click "Go to Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" at the bottom of the backup settings. Click "Create a system image" on the left panel. Select your external drive and click Next, then Start backup to create a complete system backup.
  7. Verify backup completion. Return to Settings > Update & Security > Backup to confirm File History shows "Files last copied" with a recent timestamp. Check your external drive to see backup folders have been created with your files inside.
