How to Set Up Virtual Desktops on Windows

Learn to create and manage virtual desktops on Windows 10 and 11. Organize your workspace with multiple desktop environments for better productivity.

  1. Open Task View. Click the Task View button in the taskbar, located next to the search box. Alternatively, press Windows + Tab to open the Task View interface. This displays all open windows and provides access to virtual desktop controls.
  2. Create a new virtual desktop. Click the 'New desktop' button in the top-left corner of the Task View screen, or press Ctrl + Windows + D. Windows creates a fresh desktop environment with a clean background and no open applications. The new desktop appears as a thumbnail at the top of the screen.
  3. Switch between virtual desktops. Click any desktop thumbnail in Task View to switch to that desktop. For faster switching, use Ctrl + Windows + Left Arrow or Ctrl + Windows + Right Arrow to move between adjacent desktops. Press Windows + Tab again to close Task View.
  4. Move applications between desktops. Open Task View and locate the application window you want to move. Right-click the window and select 'Move to' followed by your target desktop. The application immediately transfers to the selected desktop and disappears from the current view.
  5. Rename virtual desktops. In Task View, right-click any desktop thumbnail and select 'Rename'. Type a descriptive name like 'Work', 'Personal', or 'Design Projects'. Press Enter to save the name. Custom names appear in the desktop thumbnails and Alt + Tab switching.
  6. Configure desktop wallpapers. Right-click any desktop thumbnail in Task View and select 'Choose background'. Select a unique wallpaper for each desktop to create visual distinctions. Windows applies the chosen wallpaper only to that specific virtual desktop.
  7. Delete unnecessary desktops. In Task View, hover over the desktop thumbnail you want to remove and click the X button that appears in the top-right corner. Windows closes the desktop and moves any open applications to the adjacent desktop. You cannot delete your last remaining desktop.
