How to Set Up Remote Desktop on Windows

Enable and configure Windows Remote Desktop for secure remote access. Step-by-step setup guide for Windows 10 and 11 with firewall configuration.

  1. Enable Remote Desktop in Windows Settings. Open Settings by pressing Windows + I. Navigate to System > About, then click Advanced system settings. In the System Properties dialog, click the Remote tab. Select Enable Remote Desktop, then click OK to confirm.
  2. Configure user permissions for remote access. Right-click This PC and select Manage. Expand Local Users and Groups, then click Groups. Double-click Remote Desktop Users and click Add. Type the username you want to grant access to, click Check Names to verify, then click OK twice.
  3. Configure Windows Firewall exceptions. Open Control Panel and navigate to System and Security > Windows Defender Firewall. Click Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall. Scroll down to Remote Desktop and check both Private and Public boxes if needed, then click OK.
  4. Find your computer's IP address. Press Windows + R, type cmd, and press Enter. In the Command Prompt, type ipconfig and press Enter. Note the IPv4 Address under your active network adapter. This is the address you'll use to connect remotely.
  5. Configure router port forwarding for external access. Access your router's admin panel by typing its IP address in your browser. Navigate to Port Forwarding or Virtual Server settings. Create a new rule forwarding external port 3389 to your computer's internal IP address on port 3389. Save the configuration.
  6. Test the Remote Desktop connection. On another computer, press Windows + R and type mstsc to open Remote Desktop Connection. Enter your computer's IP address and click Connect. Enter your username and password when prompted. Click Yes to accept any certificate warnings.
