How to Set Up a New Windows PC
Complete guide to setting up your new Windows PC from first boot to final configuration. Includes account setup, updates, and essential settings.
- Complete the Windows Setup wizard. Power on your PC and follow the initial Windows Setup wizard. Select your region, keyboard layout, and connect to Wi-Fi when prompted. Create or sign in with a Microsoft account, or choose 'Offline account' if you prefer local-only login. Set up a PIN for faster sign-in when prompted.
- Run Windows Update immediately. Open Settings (Windows key + I), navigate to Windows Update, and click 'Check for updates'. Install all available updates and restart when prompted. Repeat this process until no more updates are available, as Windows often releases updates in batches.
- Install essential drivers. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Look for devices with yellow warning triangles indicating missing drivers. Visit your PC manufacturer's website to download the latest drivers for your specific model, focusing on graphics, network, and audio drivers first.
- Configure privacy settings. Open Settings → Privacy & security. Review each category on the left sidebar, particularly 'General', 'Speech', 'Diagnostics & feedback', and 'Activity history'. Disable features you don't want, such as advertising ID, website access to language list, and suggested content in Settings app.
- Remove unwanted pre-installed software. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Sort by install date to identify pre-installed software. Uninstall applications you don't need by clicking the three dots next to each app and selecting Uninstall. Focus on removing trial software, games, and manufacturer-specific utilities you won't use.
- Set up Windows Security and backup. Open Windows Security from the Start menu and run a quick scan. Enable real-time protection if it's not already active. Navigate to Settings → Accounts → Windows backup and enable 'Remember my apps', 'Remember my preferences', and 'Remember my files' to sync with OneDrive.
- Install essential software. Download and install your core applications: web browser of choice, antivirus if desired, productivity software, and media players. Use the official Microsoft Store when possible, or download directly from software publishers' websites. Avoid third-party download sites that bundle unwanted software.
- Configure power and display settings. Right-click the desktop and select Display settings to adjust resolution, scaling, and multiple monitor configuration. Navigate to Settings → System → Power to configure sleep settings and power mode. Set 'Screen and sleep' timings appropriate for your usage and enable 'Best performance' power mode if using a desktop PC.
