How to Configure Multiple Monitors on Windows 11

Learn how to connect, extend, and arrange multiple monitors on Windows 11 with this precise configuration guide.

  1. Connect the display hardware. Plug the video cable into your secondary monitor and then into an available output port on your PC's graphics card or motherboard. Ensure both the monitor and PC are powered on. Windows 11 will automatically detect the new display.
  2. Access Display settings. Right-click on an empty area of your desktop and select Display settings from the context menu. Alternatively, navigate to Settings > System > Display using the Start menu.
  3. Verify display detection. Click the Identify button near the top of the display menu. A large number will appear on each connected monitor, indicating which display is assigned to which identification number.
  4. Position the displays. Click and drag the numbered rectangles in the display layout grid to match the physical placement of your monitors on your desk. Click Apply to confirm the new spatial orientation for cursor movement.
  5. Set the display mode. Select a display from the grid, scroll down to the Multiple displays dropdown menu, and choose your preferred mode. Select Extend these displays to treat the second monitor as a separate, expanded desktop.
  6. Optimize resolution and scale. With the secondary display selected, verify the Scale and Display resolution settings are set to Recommended. This ensures text and UI elements appear at the correct size for the monitor's native hardware capabilities.
