How to Update BIOS or UEFI Firmware on a Windows PC
Learn to update your PC BIOS or UEFI firmware safely. Follow these steps to ensure system stability and compatibility for your hardware.
- Verify your current BIOS version. Press the Windows key, type 'System Information', and press Enter. Locate 'BIOS Version/Date' in the System Summary list. Note the exact manufacturer, model, and current version number.
- Download the firmware update from the manufacturer. Navigate to the official support website for your motherboard or laptop manufacturer. Search for your specific model, access the Drivers & Tools section, and select BIOS or Firmware. Download the latest version as a compressed folder.
- Transfer the firmware file to a USB drive. Extract the downloaded compressed folder. Move the BIOS file—typically ending in .CAP, .ROM, or .BIN—to the root directory of a FAT32-formatted USB flash drive. Ensure no other system files are on the drive to prevent corruption.
- Enter the BIOS/UEFI setup utility. Restart your computer. As the machine boots, repeatedly press the designated BIOS key, usually Delete or F2, until the UEFI dashboard appears. Consult your motherboard manual if these keys do not trigger the startup screen.
- Initiate the update process. Locate the firmware update tool within your BIOS settings, commonly labeled as EZ Flash, M-Flash, or BIOS Flashback. Select the firmware file stored on your USB drive from the file browser. Confirm the prompt to begin the update process.
- Confirm the firmware installation. Wait for the progress bar to reach 100% and for the system to automatically restart. Do not interact with the keyboard or power buttons until the Windows login screen appears. Re-enter the BIOS menu to verify the new version number is reflected on the main dashboard.
