How to Create a Windows Recovery Drive
Secure your Windows installation before modifying system files. Learn how to create a bootable recovery drive for emergency restoration.
- Insert and format your USB drive. Insert your USB flash drive into an available port. Ensure all data on the drive is backed up, as the recovery drive creation process will permanently erase all existing files on the partition.
- Open the Recovery Drive tool. Press the Windows key and type 'Recovery Drive'. Select the 'Create a recovery drive' option from the search results. If prompted by User Account Control, click Yes to allow the application to make changes.
- Select system file backup. In the Recovery Drive wizard, ensure the box labeled 'Back up system files to the recovery drive' is checked. This inclusion is critical for reinstalling Windows in the event of a catastrophic drive failure.
- Select your target drive. The system will scan for available USB drives. Select your target USB device from the list and click Next. Verify the drive letter matches your external media to avoid selecting the wrong storage volume.
- Finalize the creation process. Click Create to initiate the formatting and file transfer process. Wait for the progress bar to complete; do not remove the drive or power off the machine during this operation.
- Finish and label the drive. Once the process displays 'The recovery drive is ready,' click Finish. Eject the USB drive safely from the taskbar, label it clearly with a permanent marker, and store it in a secure, accessible location.
