Choosing Between a Microsoft Account and a Local Account in Windows 11

Learn how to select a Microsoft or local account during Windows 11 setup. Understand the privacy and feature trade-offs for your device configuration.

  1. Reach the account setup screen. Proceed through the Windows Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) by selecting your region, keyboard layout, and network connection. Once the system checks for updates, you will arrive at the 'Unlock your Microsoft experience' or 'Sign in with Microsoft' prompt.
  2. Evaluate Microsoft Account requirements. A Microsoft account enables OneDrive synchronization, Microsoft Store access, and device encryption recovery via your cloud profile. If you require seamless cross-device settings, proceed by entering your email address.
  3. Select a local account bypass. To use a local account, locate the sign-in field and input a non-existent email address, such as '[email protected]'. Enter any password when prompted; Windows will report an error and allow you to proceed.
  4. Create your local credentials. After the bypass, Windows will grant the option to create a local user. Enter your desired username, a password, and three security questions to ensure account recovery if the password is forgotten.
  5. Review privacy and telemetry settings. After account creation, confirm your privacy preferences for location, diagnostics, and tailored experiences. Toggle off unnecessary telemetry switches to further enhance local privacy before finalizing the desktop boot sequence.
