How to Fix a Windows PC Stuck on the Boot Screen

Resolve a Windows PC stuck on the boot loading screen using force restarts, Automatic Repair, and Safe Mode troubleshooting steps.

  1. Perform a hard power cycle. Press and hold the physical power button on your PC chassis for 10 full seconds until the machine powers down completely. Disconnect all non-essential USB peripherals, including printers and external drives. Press the power button once to restart the system and observe if the boot cycle completes successfully.
  2. Enter the Windows Recovery Environment. If the PC fails to boot, trigger the Automatic Repair sequence by manually interrupting the startup three times. Power on the machine, and as soon as the Windows logo or manufacturer icon appears, hold the power button to force a shutdown. Repeat this process until you see the 'Preparing Automatic Repair' message on the screen.
  3. Execute Startup Repair. Within the Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot, followed by Advanced options. Choose Startup Repair from the list of available tools. Allow the diagnostic utility to scan system files and restore corrupted configurations necessary for successful booting.
  4. Boot into Safe Mode. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and click the Restart button. When the system reboots, press 4 or F4 to enter Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking. If the system loads the desktop, the issue is likely caused by a third-party driver or software conflict.
  5. Repair boot configuration files. If the issue persists, return to the Advanced options menu and select Command Prompt. Type 'bootrec /fixmbr' and press Enter, then 'bootrec /fixboot' and press Enter. Finalize the repair by typing 'bootrec /rebuildbcd' and pressing Enter to scan for missing Windows installations.
  6. Perform a System Restore. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Select a restore point dated prior to when the boot issues began. Follow the on-screen prompts to revert system files to a stable state without impacting personal user data.
