How to Fix Windows Laptop Charging Issues

Diagnose and resolve charging failures on Windows laptops with these direct, actionable hardware and software troubleshooting steps.

  1. Inspect physical connections. Ensure the power cable is firmly seated in both the wall outlet and the laptop charging port. Verify that the power brick indicator light is active if equipped. Test the wall outlet with another appliance to confirm electricity flow.
  2. Perform a power cycle. Shut down the laptop completely through the Start menu. Disconnect the power adapter and, if the battery is removable, remove it from the chassis. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual static charge from the motherboard.
  3. Reinstall battery drivers. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Expand the Batteries section, right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and select Uninstall device. Restart the machine to force Windows to automatically reinstall the driver upon boot.
  4. Run the Power Troubleshooter. Open Settings, navigate to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Locate Power and click the Run button. Follow the on-screen prompts to allow Windows to reset power management settings to default values.
  5. Check battery health. Right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin). Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. Navigate to the generated file path in File Explorer to review the report for significant design capacity discrepancies or hardware failure warnings.
