How to Transfer Files to Windows When AirDrop is Unavailable
AirDrop is exclusive to Apple devices. Follow these steps to set up Near Share or alternative methods to transfer files between Windows and other devices.
- Enable Near Share in Windows Settings. Open the Settings app by pressing Windows + I. Navigate to System and select Nearby sharing. Set the preference to Everyone nearby to ensure your PC is discoverable by other devices.
- Initiate a file transfer via File Explorer. Right-click the file you intend to send in File Explorer. Select the Share icon from the context menu to open the Windows sharing window. Choose your target device from the list that appears under Nearby share.
- Accept the incoming file on the receiving device. Look for a notification banner on the target device. Click Save or Save & Open to complete the transfer. The file will be stored in your Downloads folder by default.
- Verify Bluetooth and Network profiles. Ensure your network profile is set to Private rather than Public in Settings under Network & internet. Toggle Bluetooth off and on in the Action Center to reset the pairing handshake.
- Utilize Microsoft Phone Link for mobile synchronization. If you are transferring files from a mobile device, install Phone Link on Windows. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions to link your mobile device via QR code. Use the Photos or Files tab within the app to drag and drop content directly to your desktop.
