How to Resolve a Frozen Windows PC
Stop a frozen Windows PC with these precise steps to force restart applications, terminate hung processes, and recover system stability.
- Attempt to terminate the active application. Press Alt + F4 on your keyboard. If the window is hung but the interface remains active, this command sends a close signal to the foreground process.
- Open the Task Manager. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc simultaneously. This bypasses the standard Ctrl + Alt + Delete menu to open the Task Manager directly in the foreground.
- Identify and end the non-responsive process. Locate the application marked as (Not Responding) in the Processes tab. Select the process, right-click, and select End task. If the system is too sluggish to click, highlight the process and press the Delete key.
- Restart the Windows Explorer shell. If the taskbar or desktop icons are frozen, locate Windows Explorer in the Processes list. Right-click the entry and select Restart. This refreshes the Windows shell without requiring a full system reboot.
- Perform a hardware power cycle. If the system remains entirely unresponsive to keyboard input, hold the physical power button on your computer case for 10 full seconds. Once the system powers off completely, wait 5 seconds before pressing the button again to cold boot.
