How to Use ECG on Apple Watch
Learn how to set up and use the ECG app on Apple Watch Series 4 and later to record your heart rhythm and detect atrial fibrillation.
- Set up the ECG app in Health. Open the Health app on your iPhone. Tap Browse at the bottom, then tap Heart. Select ECG (Electrocardiograms) and tap Set up ECG App. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your date of birth and answer health questions.
- Open the ECG app on Apple Watch. Press the Digital Crown to view the Home screen. Tap the ECG app icon, which looks like a heart with grid lines. If you cannot find it, swipe down and use Spotlight search.
- Position your finger correctly. Rest your arms on a table or in your lap. Place your finger from the opposite hand on the Digital Crown. Do not press the crown or move your finger during the reading.
- Start the ECG recording. Tap Start on the watch screen while keeping your finger on the Digital Crown. Stay still and quiet for 30 seconds as the app records your heart rhythm. The app will show a real-time waveform during recording.
- Review your results. After 30 seconds, the app displays your result: Sinus Rhythm, Atrial Fibrillation, Low or High Heart Rate, or Inconclusive. Tap Save to store the recording, then tap Done.
- Access detailed results. Open the Health app on iPhone and tap Browse, then Heart, then ECG. Select any recording to view the full waveform, classification, heart rate, and any symptoms you recorded.
