How to Set Up a Fitbit from Scratch
Complete guide to setting up your new Fitbit device. Download the app, create your account, sync your tracker, and configure all settings in minutes.
- Download the Fitbit app. Install the Fitbit app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Open the app and tap 'Join Fitbit' to create a new account. Enter your email address, create a password, and provide basic profile information including height, weight, and birth date.
- Charge your Fitbit device. Connect your Fitbit to its charging cable and plug into a USB port or wall adapter. Most devices need 1-2 hours for a full charge. The device will show a battery icon or percentage when charging begins.
- Add your device to the app. In the Fitbit app, tap the profile icon, then 'Set Up a Device.' Select your specific Fitbit model from the list. The app will search for nearby devices — make sure your phone's Bluetooth is enabled and you're within 20 feet of your Fitbit.
- Complete the pairing process. When your device appears in the app, tap it to begin pairing. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the 4-digit code that appears on both your Fitbit and phone. The devices will connect automatically once confirmed.
- Configure your fitness goals. Set your daily step goal (default is 10,000), active minutes target, and sleep schedule. Choose which metrics you want to track — steps, distance, calories burned, active minutes, and sleep are enabled by default. You can add or remove goals later in the app settings.
- Set up notifications. Choose which smartphone notifications to receive on your Fitbit. Go to app settings > Notifications and toggle on calls, texts, calendar events, or app notifications. Your phone and Fitbit must stay connected via Bluetooth for notifications to work.
- Customize your watch face and settings. Browse available watch faces in the app's Gallery section and install your preferred design. Adjust display settings like brightness, screen timeout, and which stats appear on your main screen. Set your dominant hand preference for more accurate activity tracking.
