How to Fix Inaccurate Heart Rate Monitoring on Wearables
Resolve heart rate sensor errors and tracking gaps on your wearable device with these diagnostic steps to ensure consistent 5-minute data logging.
- Adjust the band tension. Ensure the device is snug against your skin, roughly one finger-width above your wrist bone. A loose band allows ambient light to interfere with the optical sensor's green LED readings. Tighten the strap until it maintains consistent skin contact without restricting blood circulation.
- Clean the sensor array. Turn the device over and inspect the glass back for sweat, dust, or lotion residue. Use a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe the sensor surface clean. If residue persists, dampen the cloth slightly with fresh water and wipe again before drying completely.
- Toggle heart rate tracking. Navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Health on your paired smartphone. Locate the heart rate setting and toggle the switch off, wait ten seconds, and toggle it back on to reset the data polling process. This forces the device to re-initialize the connection between the sensor and the health database.
- Perform a hard restart. Execute a hard reset on the wearable to clear temporary cache errors affecting sensor frequency. Hold the crown or side button simultaneously with the power button until the screen goes dark and the device logo reappears. This ensures all background sensor processes restart cleanly.
- Verify software version. Go to General > Software Update on your watch or the companion app on your phone. If an update is available, initiate the installation to patch known sensor firmware bugs. Developers frequently release updates to refine the algorithms that calculate heart rate metrics during intermittent sampling.
