How to Fix a Wearable Device That Will Not Turn On

Follow this systematic guide to troubleshoot and restore power to your unresponsive smartwatch or fitness tracker.

  1. Inspect the charging contacts. Examine the metal pins on both the wearable and the charging cradle for debris or corrosion. Clean the contacts gently using a microfiber cloth dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Ensure no residue remains before attempting to connect the device to power.
  2. Test the power source. Plug your charging cable into a different wall adapter or a known working USB port on a computer. Do not use a laptop that is currently in sleep mode. If the device was connected to a hub or surge protector, bypass it and plug directly into a wall outlet.
  3. Initiate a deep charge cycle. Connect the wearable to its charger and allow it to sit undisturbed for at least 30 minutes. Deeply discharged batteries may not provide immediate visual feedback upon connection. Avoid attempting to power the device on during this initial charging window.
  4. Perform a forced restart. While the device is connected to the charger, initiate a forced restart. On most smartwatches, press and hold both the Side button and the Digital Crown simultaneously for 15 seconds until the manufacturer logo appears on the screen. Release the buttons immediately once the logo is visible.
  5. Check for thermal shutdown. Verify the device is not excessively hot to the touch. If the device was in direct sunlight or a hot environment, move it to a cool, shaded area. Allow the battery to reach room temperature before attempting another charge cycle, as internal safety circuits will prevent power intake at extreme temperatures.
