How to Isolate Smart Home Devices on a Guest Wi-Fi Network

Secure your smart home by isolating IoT devices on a guest Wi-Fi network. Follow this step-by-step guide to improve your network security.

  1. Log into your router administration panel. Open a web browser on a device connected to your main network. Enter the router's IP address (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) into the address bar and provide your administrative credentials.
  2. Activate the Guest Network feature. Navigate to the Wireless or Wi-Fi Settings section of your dashboard. Locate the Guest Network tab, toggle the status to Enabled, and assign a unique SSID name for your IoT devices.
  3. Enable AP Isolation. Look for a setting labeled AP Isolation, Client Isolation, or Guest Network Isolation. Ensure this is enabled to prevent devices on the guest network from communicating with each other or with your private network resources.
  4. Reset and reconnect your smart devices. Put your smart devices into pairing mode according to the manufacturer instructions. Connect your mobile phone to the new Guest Wi-Fi network and use your smart home app to re-add the devices to this specific network.
  5. Test device connectivity. Launch your smart home application and confirm that all devices appear as online. Attempt to toggle a light or sensor to verify the command path is functioning through the isolated network.
